Check out this terrific piece that appeared on NPR’s August 16, 2010 Morning Edition: “Experiencing Teen Drama Overload? Blame Biology” by correspondent Patti Neighmond.
The article is based in part on a book (see inset) by By Laura Kastner and Jennifer Wyatt called Getting To Calm: Cool-Headed Strategies For Parenting Tweens And Teens.
The advice is sound, brain-based and kid’s perspective-centered, and contains an outstanding portrayal of a boy’s very horrible bad day as experienced and seen through his eyes titled “The Burden of Boyhood” .
Many of the approaches and interventions preach to the Penikese choir, including lettings kids have the last word, not taking the bait or personalizing the behavior, keeping our emotions in check, minimizing damage to the relationship, and strategies for engaging the thinking brain.
