Penikese's Aftercare Program

Penikese’s Aftercare Program doesn’t begin the day after you graduate from Penikese. Aftercare begins before you even set foot on Penikese Island. It starts when we talk to your parents and the agency or school who referred you, and it starts when we interview you and ask you to consider whether Penikese is the best choice for you.

All that is because everything Penikese does is geared to preparing you to succeed in life after you leave, and in order to do that job well we have to know what your goals are, what strengths and resources you have to draw from, and what things you need to work on. After all, you can’t fix a car until you get under the hood to see what isn’t working right. Only then can you order the parts and… well, you get the picture.

When we talk about Aftercare to new students, many react in a negative way, saying they would never connect with and stay friends with “program people,” that they are happy enough to do the program and all, but after that, forget it! One student felt so strongly about this that he even threatened Penikese with a restraining order if any staff ever came looking for him on a home visit during or after his enrollment.

This student never followed through on his threat, but he didn’t need to anyway. Like other things at Penikese, how much or little you use Aftercare depends on you. But it is highly recommended, and besides, by the time most students are ready to graduate, they are counting on Penikese to help them make and maintain a successful transition to the real world.

If you are a new student considering Penikese and want to find out more about Aftercare, feel free to read on or contact Aftercare Director Linda Navarro at .

If you are a graduate - recent or from way back - and wish to stay in touch or see what’s going on with other graduates and fellow classmates, visit Penikese’s Alumni Message Board to see who has recently posted or to leave a message of your own. This site is open to graduates only and password-protected, so if you don’t have a password, contact Linda at the above address.
