Traveling to Penikese Island is a scenic excursion aboard M/V Richard S. Edwards, Penikese’s own vessel that ensures safe travel between her home port of Woods Hole, Massachusetts and Penikese Island. Delivered into full service in 2008 to specifically transport passengers to and from Penikese, the Richard S. Edwards was funded by a generous donation from Peter and Ginny Nicholas and family and manufactured in Brooklyn, Maine by the Atlantic Boat Company. She is 35.8′ long and has a beam of 12.7′. When in Woods Hole, the Richard S. Evans can be found in her slip in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute – just a short walk from Penikese’s onshore offices.
Penikese Island is a 75-acre island in Buzzards Bay. It is one of the Elizabeth Islands, which make up the town of Gosnold, Massachusetts. Penikese is located near the west end of the Elizabeth Island chain, within sight of Cuttyhunk, Martha’s Vineyard and, on a clear day, Block Island.
