A Bit About Us
Environmental Education on a Remote Island
Penikese Island School, Inc, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1973 and based in Woods Hole, MA.
Since 2019, we have operated Penikese Island School as an immersive educational experience where Penikese Island is the classroom.
Continuing our long tradition promoting education through the unique, pristine, and beautiful environment of Penikese Island, the staff, board, and community around Penikese is focused on providing local schools and educational organizations with the unique opportunity to discover Penikese, by spending a day (or longer) visiting the Island.
Studies show that spending time in nature improves children’s emotional and physical health, stimulates creativity, and promotes learning. As a remote, uninhabited bird sanctuary, Penikese Island allows visiting students to explore the natural environment away from the many digital distractions surrounding them.
Penikese Island provides the perfect setting for fostering environmental literacy and stewardship. Students are able to witness an island with minimal human impacts, and then contemplate the concept of anthropogenic effects on the environment while exploring solutions for sustainability and ecological balance for the future.
Since launching in 2019, we have been fortunate to share the natural beauty of Penikese Island and our experiential, nature-based educational programs with hundreds of students from Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay, and Martha’s Vineyard.
