Caretaking on Penikese
Staying on Penikese is a unique opportunity and a responsibility. Caretakers play an important role in maintaining Penikese Island School’s facilities and supporting our stewardship of this MassWildlife sanctuary. This is not a casual visit; you are acting as a representative of PIS while on the island.
Core Expectations

Contribution: $500 minimum donation to help cover boat, fuel, and operational costs

Leave the house and grounds clean. Clean up fully before departure.

Bring all food and remove all trash.
Responsibilities

Greet the Richard Edwards and assist with dock lines as needed for School programs

Greet visitors and ensure they understand sanctuary rules (stay on paths, no dogs, etc.)

Monitor facilities and report any issues or needed supplies

May-September (grass growing season): mow walking paths and campus areas as needed

Pre-approved maintenance projects as discussed with Kimberly and Jim
House Standards

Please try to minimize tracking mud and goose droppings indoors

Wash, dry, and put away all dishes before leaving

Sweep floors; mop Clivus floor

Wipe down counters, stove, and refrigerators
-
Please do not reorganize the kitchen!
Sanctuary Rules (Non-Negotiable)

Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation

No fires, smoking, or alcohol

No dogs
