Caretaking on Penikese

Staying on Penikese is a unique opportunity and a responsibility. Caretakers play an important role in maintaining Penikese Island School’s facilities and supporting our stewardship of this MassWildlife sanctuary. This is not a casual visit; you are acting as a representative of PIS while on the island.

​Core Expectations

  • Contribution: Minimum $500 donation to help offset boat transportation, fuel, and island operating costs.

  • Leave the house and grounds clean and ready for the next group.

  • Bring all of your own food and remove all of your trash & recycling when you depart.

  • Please use only the designated caretaker sleeping accommodations. During our Summer Camp and other programs there may be rooms and bunks reserved for staff.

 

Responsibilities

  • Greet the M/V Richard S. Edwards and assist with dock lines as needed during School programs.

  • Welcome visitors and help them understand Wildlife Sanctuary rules (stay on trails, no dogs, etc.).

  • Monitor facilities and report any maintenance issues or supplies that are running low.

  • May–September (growing season): Mow campus areas and walking trails as needed.

  • Complete any pre-approved maintenance projects discussed with Kimberly or Jim.

 

House Standards

  • Please help minimize tracking mud and goose poop indoors.

  • Wash, dry, and put away all dishes before leaving.

  • Sweep floors and mop the Clivus restroom floor.

  • Wipe down counters, stove, and refrigerators.

  • Please do not reorganize the kitchen.

  • Please do not consume food, snacks, or condiments that you did not bring to Penikese. Pantry supplies are reserved for upcoming Penikese programs.

  • If you move furniture, tables, or chairs during your stay, please return everything to its original location before you leave.

 

Wildlife Sanctuary Rules (Non-Negotiable)

  • Stay on trails and mowed areas

  • Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation

  • No fires, smoking, or alcohol

  • No dogs
