Program Information

In late June 2019 PIS hosted a highly lauded 4-day 3-night mini-science camp for middle school girls representing all the middle schools on Martha’s Vineyard.  The program was enhanced by visiting women scientists who provided hands-on laboratories and nature-based explorations on a rotating basis.  Drawing on the rich environment of Penikese and talents within the local scientific community, workshops included marine biology, avian biology nesting habitat and behaviors, electronics and robotics, underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), molecular structures and surface tension, and microbiology.  Time was allocated for team meal preparations, group arts & crafts, singing, and journaling.

The Penikese Island School acknowledges that we are gathering on the unceded ancestral land of the Wôpanâak (Wampanoag) Nation.  We recognize and respect the Wampanoag people and honor their enduring relationship with this land.  This Land Acknowledgment is an intentional act to counter the erasure of Indigenous people and to demonstrate respect for their sovereign rights.  We are committed to educating our staff and students about the longstanding history of the Wampanoag people.
